Moomaid Sundaes in Sunny St Ives
A summer trip to Cornwall isn’t complete without an ice-cream by the sea. If you’ve got a sweet tooth like me, you’ll fall in love with Moomaid of Zennor’s loaded sundaes, and their charming ice-cream parlours in Cornwall.
The Moomaid Parlour, St Ives
On a sunny Friday afternoon, my friends and I headed to St Ives for a day trip. After a mooch around the coastal boutiques, fudge shops and galleries, we were ready for the main event (ice-cream time!).
The Moomaid of Zennor parlour sits along the harbour-front, a few doors down from the arcade on the corner. It could easily be missed amongst the dozens of other ice-cream vendors and cafes. Admittedly I hadn’t paid it much attention before today.
Moomaid of Zennor Ice-cream
From rich flavours to fruity scoopfuls and refreshing sorbets, local shops, cafes and hotels all over Cornwall stock Moomaid ice-creams.
The memorable name and slogan – “no one can resist a Moomaid” – was influenced by Cornish legend, The Mermaid of Zennor. The old folklore tells of a Cornish man who becomes entranced by a mesmerising mermaid who tempts him into the stormy seas to meet his watery demise.
Giving into a Moomaid ice-cream isn’t quite as dramatic, but they are pretty damn irresistible!
Perched between the village of Zennor and The Atlantic Ocean, the cliff-side dairy farm homes a happy herd of cows, or ‘Moomaids’ who spend their days grazing on the pastures above the lapping waves. Portraits of the udderly adorable Moomaids are even on the walls of the parlour as you ponder over the many flavours.
Aside from the lovely shop in St Ives, Moomaid of Zennor have two other ice-cream parlours in Cornwall. The Porthtowan Beach cafe is perfect for ice-cream by the sea and is open all year round.
The other is located in a field between Zennor and St Ives, a stone’s throw away from the farm. ‘Moomaid in the Field’ is a seasonal pop-up shop and is open from March till October.
The Moomaid Sundaes
As well as plenty of delicious flavours to choose from, the parlours offer the most incredible sundaes.
I opted for the chocolate brownie sundae, which included chocolate and vanilla ice-cream, clotted cream, homemade brownie chunks and honeycomb drizzled in chocolate sauce and finished with a Cadbury’s chocolate flake.
Once we’d taken a couple of snaps of our insanely indulgent afternoon treats, we headed to Porthmeor Beach to tuck in – protecting our ice-creams from the lurking seagulls at all costs!
