Pints & pizzas in Penryn: Verdant Brewery’s new Taproom has opened
Beers, beats and belly-filling pizzas. When Verdant Brewing invited me to their brand new Taproom in Penryn to celebrate their launch, I did not need any persuading!
Penryn’s hottest, brewery bar
Follow the waft of fresh hops and wood-fired pizzas across Kernick Industrial Estate in Penryn, and you’ll discover Verdant Brewing’s buzzing new Taproom. Attached to the working brewery, your beers aren’t getting much fresher than this.
The spacious, warehouse interior and long, wooden tables give the space a laidback and sociable atmosphere, where you can pull up a pew and relax amongst fellow beer-lovers. The Taproom also plays venue to live music, sport, and DJ sets.
What I loved most was the fact that the Taproom acts as a viewing deck for the working brewery. There’s something really satisfying about sipping beer just a few metres from where it was created.
Fresh, hoppy ales
Verdant are best known for their juicy, hoppy, and very hazy brews. I will openly admit, I had never tried a Verdant beer before this visit. Whilst wine or gin is normally my tipple of choice, I can appreciate a good beer when I’m in the right mood, and was excited to give Verdant a go.
With 16 keg lines and 4 cask lines on the bar, we were spoiled for choice. The bar staff were super friendly and knowledgeable, and gave some great recommendations. Naturally, we ordered quite a few half pints to sample a good range, and had a couple of cheeky tasters from behind the bar too.
If I had to choose a favourite, it would be the 6.5% extra pale ale called ‘Neal Gets Things Done’, which had tropical hints of mango and grapefruit.
A very Verdant tour with Head Brewer James Heffron
After a couple of beers, we were invited to a special, evening tour of the brewery, from none other than Head Brewer, James Heffron. At the moment, the brewery don’t run tours for visitors, so this was a real behind-the-scenes treat!
On the tour, James walked us through the brewing process from ‘hop to bottom’, and shared the Verdant recipe for success – three guys from different career backgrounds, with one thing in common: a passion for creating the hoppy, flavoursome brews they love drinking themselves.
Pints and pizzas
Keeping things simple but effective, Verdant Taproom serve up Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas alongside their juicy beers. With vegan, vegetarian, and meat options, it’s a fuss-free but inclusive menu. The pizzas tasted great and suited the industrial, chilled-out vibe.
Overall, the visit to Verdant’s new Taproom was even better than anticipated. With so many fantastic brews to choose from, and a buzzing atmosphere – I can’t wait to go back again soon!
Verdant Brewing’s Taproom is currently open Thursday – Sunday. For more info, head to their website.
